Cardboard Puzzle Manufacturers
Here at Jigthings we don't manufacture jigsaw puzzles but over the years we have worked with several companies who do. We also make-up an awful lot of puzzles - we have made over 50 just for this section of our website. We hope you will find it interesting if we share with you what we know about the different manufacturers and puzzle brands.
If your main interest is in wooden jigsaw brands (particularly vintage ones) then you will find that the Jigasaurus website is a great resource. In this section of our website we will be dealing with more modern jigsaws of the cardboard variety - the ones that you are likely to buy in shops, buy online or be given as presents.
Click on the names below to be taken to a page about the individual puzzle makers. We will try to tell you a little of their history, the type of images they use and how many different images they have in their range. More importantly we will show you photographs of their puzzles with close-ups of the individual pieces at something like life-size. We know that it is the picture that first attracts people to buy a puzzle but the shape of the pieces can add another level of fascination
Patterns of Puzzle Cut
Manufactures can choose to cut their puzzle pieces in 3 distinctly different patterns – grid cut, strip cut and random cut. Take a look at the 3 illustrations below...

The illustration on the left is a section of grid cut puzzle. The corners of every piece meet the corners of all the surrounding pieces.
The illustration in the centre is a section of strip cut puzzle. Going across the puzzle the corners of every piece meet but going up and down the corners do not always meet.
The illustration on the right is a section of random cut puzzle. Anything goes! Pieces can be an assortment of interlocking and non-interlocking pieces that do not follow any particular pattern.

Dull, Ordinary, Interesting and Fascinating Pieces
Puzzle manufacturers have widely varying ideas about individual piece shapes. Some make all the pieces very similar to each other whilst others make sure that every single piece in a 1,000 piece puzzle is different from all the others. We believe that the manufacturers who go the extra mile to make varied pieces deserve to be acknowledged. Take a look at the pictures below...

The picture on the left shows what we believe to be very "Dull" piece shapes whilst the one on the right shows "Fascinating" piece shapes. Between those extremes we have invented classifications that we call "Ordinary" and "Interesting" and at each of the puzzle makers pages we will tell you what our classification is.
American puzzles fare much better than those from European manufacturers. We rate 6 American manufactuers will our top level "Fascinating" piece shapes but only one European manufacturer falls into this category.
