Saint Georges Day – Dragons

Hi and welcome to the Jigthing’s blog.

They say romance is dead but this young man in the UK found a novel way to propose to his girlfriend.  I am sure if there were still dragons about, he would have slain one for her instead!

st-george-cross-england-flag-8ft-x-5ft-373-pHere in the UK we celebrate Saint George’s Day on 23rd April every year.  It is also celebrated in many countries around Europe. Saint George is best known in the Golden Legend for slaying a dragon to save Princess Sabra and then went on to slay all the dragons in Libya.
If you would like to have a read about Saint George and his exploits, take a look at the links below.

Easter Jigsaw puzzles

Hi! With Easter nearly upon us we thought we would find some of the more unusual puzzles out there for you to try.

Easter BunnyEaster is a Christian festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the 3rd day after his crucifixion. Today we give chocolate eggs to the children, but many years ago the eggs were highly painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift. They were mainly hard-boiled chicken eggs rather than chocolate.

Early Anglo-Saxon legend states that the Saxon goddess Eostre found a wounded bird and transformed her into a hare or rabbit and the rabbit could lay eggs. It decorated the eggs each spring as offerings to the goddess Eostre, hence the rabbit and eggs that we see on the shelves in shops today.

Below is a man called John Wittneben dedicated to the hobby of dissectology (or Jigsaw puzzling to you and me!). He is fanatical about Jigsaws.

Disney Jigsaw Puzzles

Steam Boat Willie

Today we are looking at types of jigsaws that are available in the Disney range. Disney started making cartoons way back in 1923 – in 1928 Walt Disney released Steam Boat Willie which was the first cartoon to star Mickey Mouse. Minnie Mouse also appeared in that cartoon. http://thewaltdisneycompany.com/about-disney/disney-history

Have you always thought that jigsaw puzzles are just for children? Well, I am afraid that you couldn’t be further from the truth. Clinical trials have proven that puzzles are a positive way to slow down the onset of Alzheimer’s in addition to having many other benefits for people who do jigsaws. The people in the town of Talbot County, Maryland have just completed the Second Annual Jigsaw Olympics – have a read about what they got up to at the link below.

Cobble Hill Jigsaw Puzzles

cobble-hill-logoThis week’s blog looks at the different Cobble Hill puzzles. I love the variety of puzzles that Cobble Hill make.
At the bottom of the page, there is also a very interesting video by Cobble Hill’s Allegra Vernon. It shows what goes into deciding which image will make a Cobble Hill jigsaw puzzle.

The link below will take you to a very interesting gentleman called Merle Weckworth who lives in Montevideo Minnesota which this year has been gripped by bad weather. Merle has a secret system for doing jigsaws – a concept that we have never seen before and possibly never will again. Follow the link and have a look.

Fascinating Wildlife Puzzles

This week we are featuring our favourite nature and wildlife jigsaw puzzles but before that we think that a couple in Kent deserve a mention…

British Man completes 663 puzzles for charity!, http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/breakingnews/offbeat/jigsaw-john-completes-665-puzzles-29978683.html John Slattery and his wife Pat buy and make second-hand puzzles and when they are happy the puzzles are complete, the puzzles are sold and the money raised is given to the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance – a very worthy cause. John is always on the lookout for spare jigsaw puzzles. To donate a puzzle to John and Pat, call 01622 745440 or email pat.slattery@talktalk.net. Pat and John have so far raised the magnificent sum of over £16,000!WWF Logo

There are thousands of fascinating wildlife puzzles available. Below are 10 of our favourites here at Jigthings.

We are lucky enough to work in such beautiful surroundings in the wilds of Lincolnshire – daily we are visited by woodpeckers, squirrels and a whole host of other birds. On the odd occasion we have a fox meandering through the orchard. I think one of the strangest things that has happened to me on the internet was when I was playing cribbage on-line with a chap in South Africa and he typed ‘brb’ (Be Right Back). After a couple of minutes he came back and I asked what was wrong. He casually typed back he had a lion in his garden but not to worry it happens most days! Anyway, on with the blog.

Thomas Kinkade Jigsaw Puzzles

Thomas Kinkade is the most popular American artist of all time – it is estimated that one in every 20 American homes own a copy of his work.  Small wonder then that his Thomas Kinkadeimages appear on more puzzles than those from any other artist.

Kinkade is often referred to as “The Painter of Light” and his work is loved by millions of people throughout the world but inevitably he has his critics…  His work has been variously described as commercially successful kitsch, deeply hideous and “Mall Art”!  Here at Jigthings we have never heard of any of his critics but we most certainly have heard of Thomas Kinkade and we believe that the jigsaw world should be truly grateful for his existence.

Sadly Thomas died in April 2012 but we expect that puzzles featuring his work will be enjoyed and loved for generations to come.  There are some puzzles below that feature his work and even with small scale pictures on a computer screen it’s not difficult to see that he really earns the title “Painter of Light”.  On jigsaw puzzles the images are truly stunning.

Shaped Jigsaw Puzzles

There is an interesting article this week at http://guardianlv.com/2013/12/puzzles-may-offer-a-clue-to-understanding-autism/ that suggests puzzles may help us to understand autism a little better.  It’s well worth a read. Today we are featuring some of our favourite “Shaped” puzzles. Jigsaws don’t have to be square or rectangular and you will see from the puzzles below that there is an enormous range of intriguing shapes to choose from.  As usual we have given links to the pages where they can be purchased on Amazon.
